Over my lifetime crowds have been a major pressure on my identity. Originally grounded in rural life with few people around, I see why folks yearn for weekends at the cottage. What a shame it is that after 20-30 hours of slow quietness, we must brave hours of crowded traffic to return to the noisy, busy city life—yearning to escape again!

Rural life abounds with various forms of wildlife. Snakes and frogs and hunting dogs, critters of the forests and farms—working cats and not so useful mice and rats. Looking out my window in the early morning light I see the neighbors walking their pets. I see that they need these animal companions, too. Is this an attempt—albeit feeble—to reduce people density by blending in a percentage of other creatures? Or is it just that animals are more companionable than people?
